Coming soon: Black Cat Awareness Day

We've been working on an exciting new project...

You’ve probably noticed that it’s been more than a little bit on the quiet side on here lately. This is because we have been working hard behind the scenes on something. Something big, in fact. Want to know more about our grand plans? We’ll assume that’s a yes!

On Thursday 27 October, we will be holding a Black Cat Awareness Day. The reason for this is simple: black cats account for around 20 per cent of those in our care and, for whatever reason, often take longer to find new homes while their would-be adopters plump for torties, tabbies and gingers.

To really get people’s attention, we will be running a social media campaign on that day, but we need your help to make it a success! We want to see a show of solidarity for these misunderstood felines so are inviting supporters to help us raise awareness of their plight by joining in.

We’ll reveal all a little closer to the big day, but in the meantime, please consider following us on Facebook and Twitter – we’re going to need as many of you on board as we can get!

When I was growing up the majority of our cats were all black and now I have my own place, both cats I've had were black!

  5. I adopted a black & a black & white cat from Doncaster branch back in july.I would not be without both of them now.The black one called Sooty is so loyal to me,he lies on the floor at the side of my bed every morning & he seems to know when i am not to well & then he is on my bed, trying to wake me up as soon as he sees me move & i am ok he waits for me to get up & feed him alongside his mate domino.
I would say to every adopter a black cat is just as loyal friends as a tabby or torty.

  6. Are they less popular because of old superstitions? I've adopted three black rescue cats from CP over the years, and they've all been wonderfully affectionate animals...just harder to find in the dark!

  8. Is it because some people think black cats are unlucky?

Not me - I was always told they were good luck.

  16. I have 3 black cats, one was addopted from CPL as he was a stray and was beaten by kids, he is such a lovely boy but no one wanted him as he was black and slightly disfigured due to the abuse, CPL were shocked when they asked my preference for colour and i replied black, i dont see why people discriminate...mind you i have also heard of people who get new furniture and get rid of a pet because it doesnt match the new fixtures :( some people make me ashamed to be part of the human race!

  17. I met my cats at 3 weeks old. They were bundles if fluff with blue eyes and I fell in love. One is black, the other black & white. I never thought about them being boys or girls, their colour etc. I fell in love. Over a year later and they are my best friends. Totally different characters. My black cat loves snuggles under the duvet, and keeps me company when i'm in the bath. She is so gentle and loving. They have both helped to make my life complete :-)
It would be great if you could enable us to share our black cat photos x

  18. Hmmm.... could that be because they murder three times as many small rodents as torties and tabbies? Don't mind me. Off to clear up some more entrails! LOL In all seriousness, I think black and white cats enjoy a lot more companionship than many. And I wouldn't be without the little monsters for a second. If they could keep the mouse thing down a little it would be appreciated though ;)

  19. I've always wanted a black cat but when I've gone to adopt one I was never able to find one. They are beautiful cats and like any other colour loving and with a personality all of their own. My late mother taught me that black cats are lucky. The first I heard about them being unlucky was when I read an article in a magazine about them, it was one of the psychic magazines I buy. They were trying to publicize this and trying to get more people to adopt them.

  21. I have two black cats and I love them so much ^.^ <3

  22. I took in a black kitten who was stray and living in our shed. She was the most adorable kitty ever.
I think their eyes are really the windows to the soul in black cats as it's their most striking feature and the way they let you know when they're not amused! They also have the added bonus that when you wear a black skirt and they cover you in fur, it barely shows!
My kitty loved sleeping under the duvet and sitting on the edge of the bath too and never caught any mice (execept the half dead ones she'd steal from next door's cat whilst he was still playing with them!)

  23. I have 4 rescue cats - 3 of whom are black and the 4th is a mixture of tortie, white and black. i love black cats especially - my previous cat being black as well. I love all cats whatever the colour but do have a preference for black ones.

  24. I've got a lovely black CP cat and I adore him :))

  25. I have a 16 year old black cat called Mr Cheeks, he's sitting on my lap as I'm typing this. He's the most affectionate of all my cats, I have a young black one called Floyd and his tabby brother Hector. I cannot imagine why black cats are less popular, a cat's a cat when all is said and done. Colour has nothing to do with personality at all

  26. I adopted a beautiful black kitten from you a year ago. She is great fun, playing with my older cat and keeping her fit. She pretends to be very grown up and independent but sleeps on my pillows every night so she can wake me up nice and early for breakfast.
I also took on a long haired black cat when my friend was unable to look after him. He is incredibly gentle and very affectionate.
I wouldn't be without my cats, they are wonderful companions whatever colour they are.

  27. After our lovely black CP old boy departed, I wasn't sure that my white splodgy CP hellraiser/guard cat would take to another cat, until I arrived back with a small black fluffy bundle rescued from the the cat equivalent of the Gazza Strip! Not quite love at first sight...but they soon became partners in crime! Love all my cats and they have all been characters, but they have all been very affectionate(especially my black boys).

  28. Traditionally a black cat is said to bring good luck. And they would be my first choice. I have Rio, a black cat with white paws, at the moment and he is so affectionate. I've had all coloured cats and they're all adorable - say no feline racism!

  29. We have three black cats and a tabby cat and they are all beautiful. Isn't it supposed to be lucky when a black cat crosses your path?

  31. I have two black oriental-cross cats, who are siblings! They are an absolute joy, ridiculously affectionate and I couldn't ever imagine replacing them. People who are a little spooked by black cats- don't be! They are highly intelligent, curious and loyal. They have huge personalities, and their at almost human qualities can be slightly unnerving at times! Bob and Biscuit- this post was for you! :-)

  32. I have a black cat and a black and white cat. Both are adorable and a real part of the family. I also had a hamster who used to escape from his cage, one day I was sitting in my bedroom when my cat jumped up onto my bed whilst carrying the hamster the way a mother cat carries her kitten, dropped the hamster unharmed onto my lap and walked off as if to say he's escaped again lol. Love them to bits :-)

  33. I have an AWESOME black cat who sort of adopted us! He's called Shadow, and he's the softest cat I've ever felt. I could go on and on about him but I think I won't here.

  34. Ive got a black rescue cat and I adore him - all cats are lovely of course but I have a particular soft spot for black cats.

  35. Black cats are awesome.
I adopted two black sisters in 2001 from the Cat Protection and they were the best thing that ever happened to me.
Please don't overlook black cats, they are wonderful and exotic mini panthers ready to fill your life with fun and love and furballs.

  36. When my tabby cat died I visited the Derby Adoption Centre and was immediately adopted by an eight year old black cat who I named Kitty. It was hard to believe that she had been at the centre for six months. She was the best cat that I have ever had. She would prefer fuss rather than food and was a real lap cat.
When she died I returned to the Centre and I now have two black cats. Both of them are very affectionate and both try to sit on my lap at the same time!
